Scissor Grids

In the exploration of deployable panels, these two pieces exemplify the design possibilities achieved through the fusion of a scissor grid, stretched fabrics, and intentional material selection. The design lies in the dynamic interplay of form and fabric, unveiling a narrative of transformative motion, pattern, and color diffusion.

The first piece introduces a deployable panel structure, a 3 x 3 square scissor grid that undergoes elegant expansion and contraction. The deliberate offset of two layers by 5 inches adds depth, while the fabric stretched across each layer serves as surface infill. The creative ingenuity unfolds in the meticulous selection of materials – nylon and elastic yarns. These distinct choices, each with unique stretching properties, become the driving force behind the dynamic shift in pattern as the scissor grid undergoes its transformative motions.

As the scissor grid expands, the fabric stretches, creating an intricate pattern that responds organically to the structural changes. The deliberate interplay between the nylon and elastic yarns introduces a captivating visual experience, where the textile surface becomes a dynamic canvas. The motion of the scissor grid breathes life into the pattern, offering a mesmerizing display of form and fabric synergy.

Between the layers of the scissor grid, a diffusion of pattern and color takes center stage. The intentional blending produces a seamless transition, emphasizing the harmonious relationship between the layers. The viewer is invited to witness the evolution of texture and color as the deployable panel undergoes its transformative dance. The intentional diffusion not only adds visual depth but also creates a sense of continuity, linking the layers through a subtle yet profound narrative.

In the second piece, the exploration of deployable panels continues with another 3 x 3 square scissor grid, strategically designed to expand and contract. The fabric layers in this study are arranged diagonally and express the grid dimension.

The offset and stretched fabric create a harmonious dance of grids and subgrids as the pattern, and color expands and contract. The intentional diffusion between layers ensures a seamless transition, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the deployable panel's components. The viewer is immersed in an experience that goes beyond the visual, inviting contemplation of the evolving interplay between form and fabric.

These two pieces offer a comprehensive exploration of the intricate relationship between deployable panels, structure, and textiles. looking at how textiles and patterns respond to transformation and shape change. The deliberate choices in material and design create a narrative that goes beyond the static presentation of art, inviting viewers to engage in the evolving interplay of texture, motion, and color within the dynamic context of deployable panels.
