GAN generated Knitting Patterns

With the rise of using GAN to generate new images from a data set. This research explored the possibilities to look at knitting patterns as a potential data set. Punch cards were the early way that computers were coded. Although punch cards originated in textiles from the Jacquard loom. Ada Lovelace and Charles Babbage adapted this for their early computers. The punch card is still used today on domestic knitting machines. Data sets of these Fair Isle punch card patterns can easily be found via image scraping from google.

This research tested the abilities of StyleGAN2 models to generate new patterns which would replicate the constraints that are defined in the data set for punch card patterns. The results may appear random but actually are representative of the underlying system that works for these patterns.
