Origami Wall

The Origami Wall is a folding screen wall that creates an interplay between tensioned textiles and the transformability of origami, creating a visually stunning and dynamic partition that captivates the senses.

Origami to Wall Design:

Inspired by origami, the overall geometry of the screen wall revolves around the concept of foldability. The design captures the essence of this, transforming it into a contemporary folding wall with more complexity and interest then a typical folding screen. As the screen utilizes triangular folds, it morphs into an ever-changing form and function, redefining the spatial experience.

Textile Panels:

Tensioned across triangular frames, the textiles become the canvas for a captivating interplay between vision and light penetration. The porosity of the knitting pattern is manipulated to create large gaps, a dynamic pattern that shifts in density and texture. The result allows for light to filter through the two layers of fabric, casting shadow patterns that shift and change.

Parametric Pattern Design:

Parametric design, an integral part of the process, breathes life into the intricate knitting pattern. Using Grasshopper in Rhino3D allows for a translation of computational design into pixel-based patterns, connecting the digital realm with the physical. As the pattern is fabricated on a domestic knitting machine, hand manipulation and craftsmanship come together, bridging the gap between the digital and artistry.

This installation reimagines the role of textiles in architecture, transforming them from mere surface adornments to active and dynamic components that redefine our perception of space. The “Origami Wall” beckons us to engage with the potential of tensioned textiles, challenging us to embrace the fluidity and adaptability of architectural materials.
