PNEUMATIC PLEATS

Explorations in geometry of Pneumatic forms using sewing techniques from dressmaking. The traditional craft of dressmaking uses pleats, darts, and gathers. These techniques are decorative but also generate curvature and shaping to fabric to form around the complex curvature of the human body. Using simple rectangular cuts of fabric the designs were challenged to generate 3dimensional curvature by utilizing these sewing techniques. 3 prototypes were produced each exploring the possibility of more simplification of panels but using decorative and complex sewing techniques. Clo3D was used to generate the designs, simulate the inflation, and produce cutting and sewing patterns. These were constructed by hand with traditional dressmaking techniques.
